A Greener Future:
Talos Shipyards’ Solar Power Plant

The superyacht industry is experiencing a notable shift as growing awareness and interest in sustainability take centre stage. As environmental concerns become more pressing, clients and builders alike are embracing eco-friendly practices, from energy-efficient designs to sustainable materials. With this ever-growing push for a sustainable world in mind, we sat down with Nikos Stratelos, Administration & Finance Director to learn more about Talos Shipyards’ solar power plant firsthand.

Interview: Talos Shipyards’
Solar Power Plant

What is the solar power plant, and why did Talos Shipyards choose to install it?

The solar power plant is a renewable energy initiative designed to generate electricity from the sun’s energy. Talos Shipyards installed it to reduce reliance on conventional energy sources, lower operational energy costs, and minimise our, and our clients, carbon footprint.

How does the solar power plant align with Talos Shipyards’ commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility? And are there any additional sustainable initiatives on the horizon?

Talos Shipyards is strongly committed to sustainability. In the last few years, we have focused on enhancing our waste management policy and taken extreme measures to avoid sea pollution, and now, implementing the use of renewable energy sources, like the Talos Shipyards’ solar power plant, reinforces this commitment. Our main goal is to reduce our environmental impact by decreasing emissions in an industry where energy consumption is traditionally high.

The solar power plant is a foundational step in Talos Shipyards’ sustainability strategy and reflects the company’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and adopting renewable energy.

Potential additional sustainability initiatives include new investments in solar energy, energy efficiency improvements and minimisation of waste through recycling. Together with the Talos Shipyards’ solar power plant, these initiatives demonstrate dedication to sustainability and leadership in adopting green practices and technologies.

What specific environmental benefits are anticipated from the operation of the Talos Shipyards’ solar power plant over the next 25 years?

By adopting solar energy, Talos Shipyards will significantly reduce carbon emissions, lower air pollution, and conserve water, as solar power requires minimal resources compared to energy produced by fossil fuels. Over 25 years, these benefits will contribute to minimising the shipyard’s environmental footprint while promoting sustainable, cleaner energy practices.

The estimated annual environmental benefits are:

– 260 tons of standard coal saved
– 310 tons of CO₂ avoided
– 420 equivalent trees planted

In what ways does the Talos Shipyards’ solar power plant contribute to reducing the shipyards’ carbon footprint and overall environmental impact?

The solar plant reduces the shipyard’s carbon footprint by cutting down on electricity consumption from the grid, which is often powered by fossil fuels. By using solar energy, Talos Shipyards can produce a significant part of the power it needs from a clean source. This means we’re releasing less carbon into the air, which helps reduce pollution and supports the initiatives on climate change.

What challenges or obstacles did Talos Shipyards encounter during the planning and implementation of the solar power plant project, and how were they addressed?

In such projects, the most common challenges are financial investments, regulatory approvals and technical issues. Talos Shipyards overcame these obstacles through strategic planning and partnership with experts, remaining focused on the long-term environmental commitment.

What role does the solar power plant play in demonstrating Talos Shipyards’ leadership and commitment to corporate social responsibility within the maritime industry?

The installation of the solar power plant positions Talos Shipyards highly in the corporate social responsibility field, especially in the maritime industry, which is associated with high energy use and pollution. Aside from boosting Talos Shipyards’ reputation, it sets an example for other companies in the industry to enhance the adoption of cleaner energy practices.

How does Talos Shipyards plan to educate and engage its stakeholders, including customers and partners, about the environmental and financial benefits of the solar power plant?

Talos Shipyards plans to educate through various initiatives, including media publications and workshops to showcase the renewable energy benefits of the solar power plant. On-site tours will also provide a firsthand understanding of Talos Shipyards’ solar power plant and its integration with sustainability branding.

How are Talos Shipyards/PrivatSea’s clients set to benefit from the new solar power plant?

Talos Shipyards’ solar power plant offers multiple benefits for clients of both Talos Shipyards and PrivatSea. By reducing operational energy costs, the shipyard can offer more competitive pricing for maintenance services. Clients will also enhance their own sustainability credentials by partnering with a shipyard powered by renewable energy, demonstrating a commitment to eco-friendly practices. Additionally, the adoption of solar energy fosters long-term relationships, as clients increasingly prioritize sustainability and environmental responsibility. Talos Shipyards’ expertise in sustainable energy may also encourage clients to incorporate custom green solutions into their vessels, appealing to an environmentally conscious market.
